The Physical Therapy Department at Regional Hospital of Jackson maintains a certified staff of Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants who offer a comprehensive program of rehabilitation utilizing an interdisciplinary and goal-oriented approach to address the physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of our patients. Our department is conveniently located inside the hospital across the hall from the Emergency Room Registration.

Our clinical expertise and core values of compassion and respect demonstrate our firm commitment to providing the highest quality of care for our patients. Our approach is one of direct involvement with each patient; combining advanced hand-on techniques with patient education and individualized rehabilitative programs. Each of our therapists is highly trained in a broad range of traditional techniques as well as non-traditional treatment methods.

Our Physical Therapy Department renders services to infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. Through the findings of the initial evaluation, special needs of each type of patient are identified and addressed through appropriate medical, social and environmental intervention.

In the clinical setting of the department at Regional Hospital, the therapist must recognize special needs and interact with the medical staff, nursing services and other appropriate departments in meeting patient needs. Goals are established for each patient that are realistic, reasonable, outcome oriented and achievable within the rehabilitation potential of the patient.

Our Physical Therapy Department provides treatment to inpatients and outpatients with a wide range of physical disabilities from the ambulatory outpatient to the severely handicapped/disabled patient who is totally dependent for all care.

Therapy services are prescribed by either the primary care physician or a consulting specialist according to the needs of the patient.

Appointments are made to meet the patient's schedule or availability. Clinical necessity and/or appropriateness of services are established by the physician and/or the registered physical therapist in consultation with the physician.

Anodyne Therapy is the latest therapy to be successful in treating peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is an abnormal and usually degenerative state of the nervous system or nerves. It is a two-edged sword in that it causes pain and numbness, terms that seem to be contradictory of each other, but are very real for those who experience it. Peripheral neuropathy is one of the most common complications associated with diabetes. However, it can also be caused by circulatory problems, medications, chemotherapy, alcohol and AIDS.

Recognizing that the lack of blood circulation is one of the primary reasons why the nerves begin to die in the outer extremities of the body, such as the hands and feet, Anodyne Therapy is a process that increases blood circulation into those peripheral areas of the body. The process is so simple it is hard to believe that it is true. Anodyne emits infrared photo energy to increase the blood flow within the affected area. With renewed blood circulation, the nerves are rejuvenated; thus, reducing nerve pain and numbness.

Results vary with each patient. However, with two clinical studies, 87-89% of the patients studied said that they experienced significant reduction in pain. Supplementing the infrared photo energy therapy with stretching and strengthening exercises, dynamic and static balance exercises, massage therapy and other modalities for the reduction of pain, many patients report a total reduction in pain and a return to a quality of life prior to the neuropathy.
